Saumur Rouge "Domaine de Peyanne"

The wines from this estate are strongly influenced by traditional production methods, and are ambassadors for their appellations.


The wine
"My Cabernet Franc vines are between 20 and 60 years old. The old vines include 4 rows laid out in a very unusual way. Passionate about the history of my domaine, I decided to keep them because they represent my grandfather's work and expertise. Planted in curved narrow rows, they enabled horses to plough the soil. I target low yields in my vineyard and wait until the grapes are perfectly ripe before picking to express all their goodness. My byword is balance and I am very attached to a respect for nature."

The winegrower : "I am the 4th generation of my family to make wine here. The domaine was created by my great-grandfather. I took over in 1991, when my father retired. The first year was very challenging because the vineyard had suffered a great deal from spring frost. But I persevered because I was under no illusions. Being a winegrower is not always easy, and you need to see things in the long term. I am pleased that my vines now, and am proud of every medal my wines win.

I love historic buildings and so am pleased to live in an old house made of tufa. It has two cellars previously used to make wine. These still contain winepresses, barrels and, of course, a few old bottles... I would like to pass on my passion for winemaking by leaving the domaine to one
of my children, but only the future say if things will work out this way."
Located in the heart of Saumur region.
The Cabernet franc vines grow on a gentle slope at the food of the traditional winegrowing community of Courchamps. The domaine has 5 plots with the same terroir : sand and clay soil mixed with sandstone.
"Located in the heart of the Saumur region, my 6-hectares of vines grow on gentle slopes at the foot of the traditional winegrowing community of Courchamps. The domaine has 5 plots with the same terroir: sand and clay soil mixed with sandstone - which is very rare elsewhere in the appellation. This terroir enables the vines to resist summer heat waves and complements the calcerous limestone (tufa) subsoil that regulates water supply."
The grapes are totally destemmed. Fermentation in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats (23-24°C). Light daily pumping over during the first third of alcoholic fermentation, followed by a long maceration (16 days). Malolactic fermentation in our cellars.
The wine is aged for 6 -10 months before bottling.

Best enjoyed slightly chilled (14-16°C).
Tasting notes
Beautiful dark-red colour. Expressive nose of red fruit aromas (raspberry, black currant, black cherry). Harmonious and full-bodied on the palate, this red wine has a fine tannic structure. Long and elegant finish.
Food and wine pairings
It goes perfectly with delicatessen and red meats or soft cheeses.
